FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SKYLIGHT BOOKS TO PARTICIPATE IN MAY DAY GENERAL STRIKE

(April 24, 2012) -- Skylight Books in Los Feliz
will participate in the May 1st General Strike
next Tuesday, serving as a meeting place in the
morning for neighborhood members to gather and
travel to the Occupy activities downtown, and
hosting labor singer Ross Altman at 7:30pm to
teach about the history of May Day and lead and
perform classic labor songs. The popular
bookstore will also close its storefront from 2
to 5 p.m. so that its staff may attend
demonstrations downtown, and its Arts Annex at
1814 N. Vermont will close the entire day in
support of the call for a general boycott.

Citizens are invited to gather at 12 p.m. and
meet members of the bookstore staff as well as
artists affiliated with the Occupy movement, who
will then lead the group via public transit to
converge with other groups at MacArthur Park and
then march downtown, to join in OccupyLA’s 2:30
p.m. rally at 6th Street and Main Street, as well
as the 4 p.m. rally at Olympic and Broadway in
support of immigrants’ rights. (Participants
should bring $1.50 if they plan to take the red line with the group.)

Skylight will also serve as a point of
information throughout the day, and community
groups are invited to drop off fliers from now
through May 1st advertising other events in
support of the General Strike. Displays
throughout the bookstore will also highlight
titles on the history of May 1st, the Haymarket
Affair, and the labor movement more broadly.

At 5 p.m., when its 1818 N. Vermont storefront
reopens, light refreshments will be available
throughout the evening to the public. At 7:30
p.m., folk musician Ross Altman will share and
teach classic labor songs as well as some brief
history about May 1st and International Workers’
Day. Ross is a member of Local 47 of the
Professional Musicians’ Union—AFL-CIO and writes
for FolkWorks. He recently performed in the
Grammy Museum tribute to the legendary Ash Grove folk music club.

“As an independent bookstore, we encounter daily
the ways in which an economy based only around
large profit can destroy local,
neighborhood-focused enterprises,” said Skylight
bookseller Meg Wade. “So we’re participating on
May 1st to show our support for strong,
community-based economies that benefit the lives
of their workers, because we think that we and
our fellow Los Angelenos deserve that.”

About Skylight Books

Skylight Books is an independent bookstore
(founded in 1996) in a 1930s storefront located
in Los Feliz—between Hollywood and downtown Los
Angeles. In 2008, Skylight expanded into the
storefront next door, moving the art,
photography, architecture, design, film, theater,
music, graphic novel, and magazine sections into
the new space, and giving more room to the
fiction, nonfiction, and children’s sections in
the original store. The store is active in
supporting its local library as well as young
writers at our local schools and has also, with
the help of its customers, donated many books to
the Children’s Hospital Poetry Project and
numerous neighborhood elementary and high
schools. Skylight's author events have included
many high-profile novelists, graphic novelists,
and political authors including Cornel West, Mike
Davis, Jim Hightower, the CodePink founders, and Amy Goodman.
