ARE THEY READY TO THROW SAN ONOFRE'S SWITCH? HOW WILL WE STOP THEM? In the past few days, ominous signs have surfaced around San Onofre. General Electric has gone public with its view that the reactors there are safe and ready to re-start. The utilities have told the Nuclear Regulatory Commission the plant can be run at 100% power, even though they may only want to "test" it at 70%. The NRC has said it will decide on the re-start in April or May, which does not give us much time. It has promised at least one more public "meeting," which may not rise to the standard of an official hearing. There is more. After a year in which the public learned there is no real need for these reactors, and that their owners knew they were installing faulty turbines, nonetheless the utilities want us to foot their $765 million bill for them .after all this, the pressure for re-start is rising. In the backdrop, Fukushima's power has allegedly been restored after breathless hours wondering if there will be sufficient cooling for spent fuel pools that could still spew horrendous clouds of radiation throughout the planet. And a tragic official study reveals more than 40,000---FORTY THOUSAND!--- cases of thyroid abnormalities among children near the reactors. Our meeting will confront these terrible realities and focus on how we can save southern California from a similar fate. Harvey Wasserman has emphasized that IT IS EASIER TO KEEP NUCLEAR PLANTS CLOSED THAN TO SHUT THEM DOWN!! If you care about this threat in the least, THE TIME TO ACT IS NOW! Keep yourself & your friends informed, bring them along. Please RSVP Don't miss this meeting!!!! HARVEY WASSERMAN helped coin the phrase "No Nukes" in 1973 and continues to work to rid the planet of lethal reactors like San Onofre and Diablo Canyon, where he was arrested in 1984. He's author of SOLARTOPIA! OUR GREEN-POWERED EARTH, the first full-scale vision of a green-powered Earth. He edits: www.nukefree.org and his "Green Power & Wellness Show" is at: www.prn.fm On another front, Wasserman, along with Bob Fitrakis, helped uncover the theft of the 2004 presidential election in Ohio. He's co-authored six books on election protection, as well as HARVEY WASSERMAN'S HISTORY OF THE US, introduced by Howard Zinn. = - - - http://lists.gp-us.org/mailman/listinfo/atw-news ### ------------------------------------ --------------------------------------------------------------------------- LAAMN: Los Angeles Alternative Media Network --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Unsubscribe: <mailto:laamn-unsubscr...@egroups.com> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe: <mailto:laamn-subscr...@egroups.com> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Digest: <mailto:laamn-dig...@egroups.com> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Help: <mailto:laamn-ow...@egroups.com?subject=laamn> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Post: <mailto:la...@egroups.com> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Archive1: <http://www.egroups.com/messages/laamn> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Archive2: <http://www.mail-archive.com/laamn@egroups.com> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yahoo!
