For example, Roy has already indicated that he believes that central vs. distributed is nothing but a reflection of social dynamics and that constraints imposed by the tools are in fact a feature and not a bug. My interpretation of Linus's position on the subject feels parallel to Roy's in rejecting the other side as suboptimal for the social practices established in the different communities.
Precisely.
Understanding the impact of such assumptions is *far* from paving the cowpath, if you ask me.
But that's not this forum.
I don't claim to know what the solution is or whether Roy or Linus are right, but stating that subversion's current feature set is 'complete' as in 'best possible for the apache-style development dynamics' might be true, but needs research and brainstorming for me to buy it (for example, svn lacks git's binary backtracking, which has nothing to do with central vs. distributed, but in order to be implemented, it might require more local and offline storage abilities... which might lead to a better offline behavior for svn as well)
First off, they are *both* right, which is to say that certain tools are used to accomplish a certain process; the process is further shaped by the tools chosen. On your second point, perhaps take specific issues to svn's own development list instead of forking such constructive discussion to a different forum?
It is true that, ultimately, labs might not be the place for such verbose discussions (as it might consume too much oxygen on this mail list and remove it from other things), but, if you ask me, I'd rather risk that than having a good research idea die because of lack of nurturing support.
Labs have NO provision for a specific mailing list, and yes, I totally believe that continuing in this vein on [EMAIL PROTECTED] is going to piss off the people trying to get something accomplished, with no interest in that sidebar. In most other ASF communities, you could fork off a special purpose list; by charter labs is prohibited from doing that.
