I really have to jump in here...  I agree completely with
the ban against "advertising", but I think that it's
important to be clear about what advertising IS!

Advertising is announcing the availability of products for
sale by the person who is selling the product and will be
making a profit.

It is NOT:

- an endorsement of a new product by a person who has used
it but does not stand to profit by someone else's sale of
same...

- a notice of a museum display whether made by the museum or
an interested member...

- an announcement of a lace day or similar event...

Let's encourage our museums and historical societies to keep
us notified through announcements on the list!  Let's
continue to advise each other of lace days and similar
events!  And let's simply delete, unread, (or better still -
block -) offending vendors who post advertisements to the
list.  The offensive vendor has shown she is making an
effort to play by our rules.  For that we can be grateful.
