Mention was made a few weeks ago of the English not celebrating St George's
Day, and that local planning permission was needed to fly both the English
flag and the Union Jack.

English flags are currently becoming more and more common. Mostly flying
from cars, but many appearing in the windows of houses. There are also
shirts, baseball caps and other items of clothing with the flag on. Why?
Because England's football (soccer) team are playing in the European Cup.
Celebrating football is far more important than celebrating our saint's day!

It's really sad that I can still name the squad who won our last piece of
football glory in the World cup of 1966. Football fans (I'm not one any more
because the game's become too dirty and commercialised) still live in hopes
of winning something else.
