Pennsic Wars - Google will provide videos of same, though I don't
fight. Yes, lace was involved. Sunday Aug 3 was Lacemaking day on
Artisan's Row - but unfortunately also the Arts & Sciences exhibit in
the afternoon for 5 hours. The ruff with the lace from Karoluskant and
the pillow with Bell's edging almost sufficient for the cuff edges of
the hand-sewn linen shift (also on display) garnered many small awards
("largesse") from passers-by.
For verbal description: Why "war"? When Cariadoc was King by Right of
Arms of the Middle Kingdom (Midwest USA), he sent a challenge to the
king of the East. It was ignored. A few years later, a job transfer, and
Cariadoc was King by Right of Arms of the East, found the challenge, and
the rest is history. Battles of all sorts (with rattan weapons, if they
are things like swords or spears; special tips if they are rapiers), a
siege of a fortification.... shopping, and more shopping in an instant
village. Think up to two full weeks of camping with (by the end)
10,300+ people, many in pavilions that are like medieval pavilions or
yurts. My son-in-law and my daughter built their own 16-foot diameter
yurt which will stand up to any weather that has been thrown at it so
far (including up to 60 mph winds three years ago); I use a modern tent
because I want to be able to set it up and take it down by myself if I
have to, AND I go in a Prius - a neat trick, since we wear medieval
clothes day and night and on the whole, 3 medieval outfits takes up a
lot more room than 3 pairs of shorts/skirts and T-shirts... There are up
to 20 classes at a time every hour of every day in everything from
hand-sewing 101 through lacemaking, to carving soapstone to make molds
in which to cast pewter, to..... well, look at the website for Pennsic
University and you can get a flavor for it. I learned a lot - including
how to gesso a panel and make egg tempera to paint on it, and use of
basic silversmithing tools. Probably will teach some classes next year;
just was overwhelmed with retiring this year. People come from all over
the world, including Europe and Canada and Australia, etc.
Probably Cariadoc did have a bardic circle - he certainly was running
classes, and I saw him several times. There was also a concert/jam at
Andelcamp in honor of Owain Phyfe, a beloved performer who passed away a
couple of years ago.

Can we get an explanation of the Pennsic Wars. Where was it held, what did
you wear, was lace involved? Doubt that but maybe you can enlighten us.
Sounds like a lot of folk involved. Was it muddy or did you get good
weather?

Oh, that sounds
like fun. Did Cariadoc conduct a bardic circle?
