My guess is it is actually Veronal that is being talked of. This is the
trade name for barbital which is a barbiturate rather than an opiate
(they are chemically quite different and have different pharmacological
actions). It was used as a sleeping pill up to the mid 60's so someone
dying of an overdose (either self inflicted or by a third party)
would have been feasible. (My pharmacology is a bit rusty these days. Too
many years away from the lab bench.) Andrea Lamblein Cambridge, UK Date:

Subject: [lace-chat] 'Verenol' meaning please

I was watching an episode of Agatha Christie's 'Poirot' a couple of days
ago, and one of the characters died of an overdose of 'verenol'. Anyone
know
what is is?

I assume it's an opiate, but am probably wrong. I've done a google, but
can
only find another passage from a book, and reference to it's use in
immunological studies with rat prostate, but with no definition of what
it
is.
