Dear Friends,
Here are some more to recall:-
My favourite was the one we used to say to see who we were going to
marry. This was said counting out the cherry pips in a desert or even
the gunshot pellets from a rabbit stew when Pa had shot the rabbit.
It went thus:-
Tinker, tailor, soldier, sailor, rich man, poor man, beggar man, thief!
You'd just say that over and over moving round the pips and the one
you ended on was what you were destined to get :) - so much laughter.
Engine, engine, number 9,
Running along the Calligan line,
The Calligan line began to shine,
Engine, engine, number 9.
Piggy on the railroad picking up stones,
Along came an engine and broke piggy's bones.
Charlie over the water,
Charlie over the sea,
Charlie on the ferry boat,
And out goes he.
OR Charlie broke the teapot,
And blamed it on me (that's the one I knew)
Charlie, Charlie, stole some barley
Out of the baker's shop.
The baker came out and gave him a clout
That made poor Charlie hop.
My mother and your mother
Were hanging out clothes
My mother gave your mother
A punch on the nose
What colour did it bleed?
Blue - B-L-U-E. (couting out whatever colour was said) We often used that one.
Two little sausages frying in a pan
One jumper out
And the other went bang (A skipping chant)
My mother said I never should
Play with the gypsies in the wood
If I did she would say
Naughty girl to disobey.
Jumbo, Jumbo, sitting on a matchbox,
Eating bread and cheese.
Along came a rat and bit him on the back
And made poor Jumbo sneeze.
