I think I'd contact Canon in the US directly and get it in writing that it 
is a known fault.  Perhaps they will send you the mailing stuff, like they 
sent to Clay - you might have to pay for insurance.  Otherwise, I could 
bring it back with me on my next trip, not sure when that will be, or 
perhaps someone else who is travelling to the US might be prepared to carry 
it across the pond for you.
