Dear David, I agree with Malvary, that the Arizona desert in winter is a wonderful break from the winds and cold and nastiness of New York in January. I grew up in New York City, and it's really nasty, or can be. Don't forget to contact Devon about lace things to see in NYC, I think she's your best guide there, and don't forget to go to the MMA. (Metropolitan Museum of Art) As for Arizona, this is the third year we are spending winter here, rather than 3 hours' drive southwest of New York, which is now home. But there is a great difference in temperature between the area around Phoenix, which is a desert valley, sunny usually very warm, easy to get to the wild country, and the northern part of the state around Flagstaff and farther north to the Grand Canyon. When a storm comes through, which is rather rare, Pheonix gets rain, and Flagstaff and farther north get snow, sometimes a fair amount. I know nothing about New Mexico in that regard, but generally the 'high country' will get snow, and can be quite nasty as far as sight seeing is concerned. There are so many things to see in the Phoenix area, as in desert, mountains, hiking and the like, as well as nearby Indians, able to be seen in sunny warm conditions. There is a very active lace group in the Phoenix area, Lacy ladies of Arizona, which meets frequently, and demonstrates, as January ! is the time for demonstrations, the Renaissance Faire and the like. While Phoenix is a metropolitan area, it is nothing like New York, where city conditions spread for miles in all directions. It is easy to get to sparsely populated areas. We are in Apache Junction, the last town east of Phoenix, very near the wide open spaces. It takes about 40 minutes by car to get here from the airport in Phoenix, which isn't bad. I wish I could go to Carnegie Hall and see you, but all being well we shall be in Apache Junction. lrb
