A friend made a shawl using fingering-weight yarn.  She used spring-type
clothes pins (for hanging laundry to dry).  She held the pin open and
wrapped the yard around one of the branches, then let the thing spring
closed.  That kept the bobbin from unwinding, instead of a hitch.  Need to
lengthen the thread, just open the spring and release a few more rounds.  It
worked well for her, although it did feel funny handling them instead of
normal bobbins.
