Hallo Lacefriends,
I am behind the discussion but I tried to follow with interest.
Perhaps we should also point out that old laces 100, 200 or even 300 years old belong to what we call antiques. And they are, how Lorelei pointed out very clear, worth what the individual person mean. Here in Germany we have often the problem to make clear that lacemaking isn't only a Handarbeit ( I am not sure if handycraft is the right word in english) but that it belonged to what we say Handwerk or use you the word handycraft for that. Please, you english-language-born people clear this up for me. When people mean it's "only" Handarbeit than they can't understand why it cost so much.
And what Aurelia said to us, that we can only "educate" the others when we give them information about this precious good is true as well. The difficuly is to reach more than only lacemakers. And a very important point is, that there are a lot of wrong informations in literature and in mind of people. And often one person write what another has written before so this faults have a very long life. And to fight against this is very hard work.
I personally are a collector not for possesing this things but for studying how they are made. And I did some reconstructions of such old pieces. But sometimes I can't resist and buy such a precious piece but they went to me to the theatre or other such events to let them live again and be once more be admired. And if I am lucky enough a discussion starts and i can informe others about lace and its value.
Let's do our very best and the list is a fine place to clear up such things. And I want to say thank you to you all to be with you on this list and hope we will be together still a long time.
Greetings and happy Christmas to you all

Ilske from Hamburg in Germany where today the sun is shining again.
