Perle 5 is heavier than perle 8, and both are *much* heavier than what 
most people call "sewing thread" (the stuff you use in a sewing 
machine, #50).  Either weight of perle would be good for a beginner--
easy to tension without breaking, it goes quickly, and it comes in 
lovely colors.  Personally, I prefer size 8 to size 5 because the 
latter is a bit too "fluffy" and soft for me.

In the US, perle 5 is a lot easier to find than perle 8.  Craft places 
and craft departments of general stores that stock #5, often don't 
stock #8.
