>>>So I decided to go with the thread for the first few prickings in this book - cotton perle 5. I thought I had some of this thread but have just discovered that it is no. 8 that I have and I really cannot visualise no.5 at all. To top it all I have mislaid Brenda's book!!!! <<<
Perle 5 is heavier than perle 8, and both are *much* heavier than what most people call "sewing thread" (the stuff you use in a sewing machine, #50). Either weight of perle would be good for a beginner-- easy to tension without breaking, it goes quickly, and it comes in lovely colors. Personally, I prefer size 8 to size 5 because the latter is a bit too "fluffy" and soft for me. In the US, perle 5 is a lot easier to find than perle 8. Craft places and craft departments of general stores that stock #5, often don't stock #8. Robin P.
