Actually a softly spun 2 ply thread will flatten and *appear* to be
thicker (fewer wraps/cm) than it really is when when its wrapped with a
bit of tension.
But wire should be easier (famous last words?), so perhaps, I'll have
a go at it (during the Convention week and between the bouts of
canning <g>)
