In June I entered a piece of lace in the local library's art exhibition. I
was thrilled to have it accepted, and amazed to see it on one of the
postcards for publicity, but the news gets better and better. Artists have
indeed entered this from all round the country. I
heard for definite this morning that I was awarded second place. I have
been to see the exhibition - and to my mind it is full of "real" art, so I
am thrilled to be included, and astounded to get second place. (First prize
was an acquisition prize and I chose not to be eligible for that as I didn't
want to sell my piece - and didn't think I stood an earthly of winning that
anyway).
I wonder if I got the prize because my piece was a book (and this is a
library). It is a three
dimensional book too, and had considerable novelty value being made of
bobbin lace. I take consolation when I think like that, as the judges were
"proper" ones from the art world, one having trained at the Art
Institute of Chicago, the other being art museum curator at the local
big university.
If you want to see it the winning piece was:

my piece was:

Which you will have seen before, as I made it for the Lace Guild's last
competition. It has been very cleverly exhibited with mirrors underneath and
behind it, so that you can see top and bottom, interior and cover.
and third prize went to 'The Immigrant'
