Hi All, I got "Whitework Embroidered Lace Hankerchiefs" by Elizabeth
Kurella ISBN 0-9642871-5-3 when I was in Denver. I'm writing to arachne
because the hankies have lots of Needle Lace, drawn work and embroidered net
along with the white embroidery. Beautiful lace on the edges of the hankies
too, in BL and NL. One has an exquisite Point de Gaze border reflecting the
pattern of the whitework on the edge of the hankie. That one also has an
exquisite PdG monogram of a "C"! About half the book is general information
and in the second half she give the "biographies" of a number of hankies.
She comments on all the things one can find out if one looks closely! On
one hankie the whitework was cut off another hankie and appliqued onto new
fabric. It's astonishing to see how the eagle's toes and feathers are
appliqued on! There are some interesting stitch combinations in the NL
fillings too

This book is in Kurella's "Connoisseur's Guide" series so in the first half
there is a lot about what to look for if you're collecting Whitework
hankies - how to tell if it's hand or machine-made, what different qualities
to look for, etc.

She is a friend but I don't get any royalties from the books <G>. I thought
those of you interested in lace ID and history might be interested. And I
know my "collection" of lace and other fabric items is pretty diverse
depending upon who gave what to me so some of you might have some of these
lovely hankies in your collections!
While looking up the ISBN I see an arachne got thanked too!!

Thanks to all who kept my e-mail inbox fillied during the holidays!!
Jane in Vermont, USA wishing you all a Happy and Lacy New Year!!
