I can’t fathom where the best place for fitting Australia and New Zealand in is,
based on international date line and time zones.

If we start it in Australia, late in their evening, on say Sept. 1, when the West Coast joins in at 6 a.m. their time, it will be Sept. 1 in N. Am.

Confusing isn't it? I think the time zone map at: http://www.travel.com.hk/region/timezone.htm explains it quite clearly. Look at the bottom of the screen.
