I started with plastic bobbins, and still use them on occasion. I wanted to point out that not all plastic bobbins are the same quality. I have seen a few that I would not want to use because they were poorly made and had sharp edges. If the bobbins are smooth and comfortable to use, then use them. It sure helps the budget if it's tight.
