Hi Lacemakers all,
I read this thread with a great deal of interest! My name is all over the
place - libraries, intenet, post offices, general stores - as well as phone
numbers and addresses, so that I can publicise my classes, both the weekly
ones at the school and the intermittent ones all over the counties. I
have done this for many years now and, despite initial humming and hawing of
forebodings from friends, I have had no problems at all with unwanted phone
calls. Maybe its because lacemakers are associated in the axe-murderer's
mind with little old grey-haired ladies, and not worth the axe-murderer's
time ...
The downside is that, over the years, it has only produced a small number of
lace-makers for tuition! Most of the 'new' lacemakers have been acquired
through demonstrating all over the place with the 'Have-a-Go' pillows - and
the resultant flyers which I dope out like confetti. I work on the
principle that, however many I dole out, if I get one positive reply, then
that is a good thing.
Funnily enough though, I host a monthly meeting - no fee, tea, coffee and
cakes supplied, but bring a packed lunch - for lacemakers specifically, and
other craftworkers as well, but we have a hard-core of just four who appear
every month, and possibly two or three who turn up very occasionally, even
though I know there are lacemakers in the near vicinity, and who I am sure
would enjoy a day making lace. Still - we keep on trying to drum up
support and hopefully some time soon we will have to overflow to the Parish
Hall ...
Take care of yourselves, and may your pins never bend!
Carol - in Suffolk UK

Hi Devon and All,
Then I moved back to the "lace desert" and with help, started a guild.
