I am looking to do a 'special' piece of lace to celebrate our 40th
Anniversary, next year.

The question is has anyone else done something like this for themselves and
what kind of thing.

I haven't; my DH and I have just agreed to "forget" our anniversary (34 yrs, a month ago), as we have "forgotten" most of them, after the first 5 yrs or so.

We don't have room to use my original idea of a table runner, and we want something we can see around all the time or very frequently, not something to
disappear into a cupboard and come out one each year.

The special-photo frame ideas that several people have offered, all sound good to me. Another one, which nobody's mentioned so far but which would also fit within your requirements (something special, to be seen frequently, but not a table runner) is a piece of lace to hang either on he wall (mounted, under glass, safe), or in the window (pretty, but exposed to the sun's destructive properties).

That piece could be large or small, simple or complex, any shape, any thread, made in any technique you're comfortable with and it could incorporate any symbols that are meaningful to you and your husband. "Special" in a different way, but still unique.
