IIRC the books Jean bought were from USA but posted in Canada?
I don't know if that bumped the price up or not.

UK internal post has recently changed to size and weight instead of just weight, but international packages are still just priced according to weight.

For most countries the maximum weight is 2Kg for packets and 5Kg for printed papers. For Canada there is a strict 2Kg limit regardless of what the parcel contain. I found that out the hard way when I had to bring a parcel home and re-pack it into two smaller ones.

Malvery, it could be that your padded envelope was small enough for internal mail but not for international.

On that subject it might be timely to advise UK folk to be aware of the changes when posting Christmas cards. An "ordinary" 1st or 2nd class stamp will only suffice for a C5 envelope (the envelope to fit A5 paper) or smaller, AND less than 5mm thick. If you put two or three cards into one envelope, or you use a padded envelope it will be thicker and will need a "large letter" stamp.

Hi Jean and others - you can check out the rate that should have been charged for sending the parcel. You would need to weigh the books and estimate the weight of the packing but you would definitely get an idea of how much you should have been charged. You also have to take into account the size as it is also based on size as well as weight.

Interestingly, I made a baby blanket for my new great niece and took it to the post office to mail. Needed to also buy a large bubble pack envelope to pack it into which I did. Addressed the envelope, stuck down the flap, put on the return address and handed it to the clerk to weigh. After various computations of weight and size he told me that it was too big to send!! Duh - it is in one of the Canada Post own brand envelope, so if you can't send things that big why do you sell envelopes that size? Anyway, he folded over one end of the envelope and put tape right across it. It cost me $31.00, so $48 for 4 small books sounds a bit high (actually sounds a lot high).
