I read in one of my books that when the gimp travels from left to right, go
under the left and over the right. When travelling from right to left, go
over the right and under the left. What a waste or words! They are both
saying under left and over right. So, when I first encountered gimps, I just
recited "lift left" until it became automatic.
As for the number of twists, I'm currently being told that it's usually
twist twice each side of the gimp, unless there are more twists in what's
each side of it, in which case the number of twists matches those in the
other stitches on that side. So, for example, if there's a gimp between the
net in Bucks point (where there are three twists on each stitch) and
honeycomb stitch (where there are two twists), then there are three twists
on the net side and two twists on the honeycomb side.
