"PREPARING FOR THE BALL: COSTUME OF THE EARLY NATION"
Through July 4 at  Dumbarton House [Washington DC], this is a museum-wide
exhibition of period  clothing, accessories, jewelry, fashion plates and
manuscripts from 1775 -  1825, displayed throughout the Federal-era period
rooms and in an adjoining  exhibition gallery. Co-curated by S. Scott Scholz
and MARY D. DOERING  [Southeastern Region]. COLLEEN CALLAHAN and NEWBIE
RICHARSON [Southeastern  Region] are conserving pieces for the exhibit and

"FIRST  LADIES AT THE SMITHSONIAN"
Ongoing at the National Museum of American History  [Washington DC], this
exhibit displays gowns worn by first ladies during the  past 100 years. The
dresses include Grace Coolidge's flapper-style evening  dress, Eleanor
Roosevelt's pink gown from the 1945 inauguration reception,  and Helen Taft's
1909 white-silk chiffon inaugural gown. The exhibition also  features
portraits, White House china, personal possessions and related  objects from
the Smithsonian's unique collection of first ladies' materials.  For details

Dunbarton House is headquarters of the Colonial Dames of  America.  These 
ladies preserve and maintain historic properties throughout  America.  One 
property is the Tate House near Portland,  Maine.  Sometimes, the replica 
fashion 
doll that our Tess made is exhibited  there.
