I do not own the pocket winder that some have written about.  I have seen it,
though not in action, but I understand it does not wind all types of bobbins.
Maybe someone who has one can tell us about what bobbins it will not hold.-----

I have this winder, and the optional "continental adapter". The basic winder
is meant for spangled bobbins. The bobbin rests in a groove with the rubber
band going around the bobbin and a wheel turned by a crank. The crank moves
the rubber band and the rubber band twists the bobbin within the groove.
Cylindrical bobbins, like most Midlands, work very well. And since the winder
doesn't grab the bobbin by its bottom, there's no problem with the spangle. I
wouldn't do Midlands that have beaded wire around the shaft. And continental
bobbins have too much shaping to sit in the groove and be turned.

The adapter has a groove of the same depth, but very short so only a very short
length of the bobbin sits in it. Many continental bobbins will work, but not
all. I've only used Swiss continentals, which work just fine; Dutch, which
don't work because there's too much turning and not enough plain cylinder; and
internationals, which sometimes work but generally not very well because of the
square. I believe the various Belgian bobbins would work well, with a
cylindrical shaft with a bulge only at the bottom.
