Could you work on 3 circular needles? Two hold an even number of stitches each, a third needle is active until the next needle is empty, and that becomes the active one - assuming you are working a continuous round. However I think this would apply to back-and-forth as well. All else I can suggest is to google lace knitting supplies, if there isn't a long enough option, you might want to locate a place that sells the needle ends and the connecting nylon filmament separately, so that you can customize a circular needle for the project.
