I took my knitting from Manchester to Prague (and back) in my hand-held. Perhaps that was allowed because it was on wooden dps rather than metal pins. Not tried taking lace on a plane and my luggage allowance is severely restricted when I go to Ireland on Saturday, I don't think I'll be taking it then.
