"That's according the Encyclopädia Britanica lace is an ornamental openwork
fabric formed by looping, interlacing, braiding or twisting threads. what I
found and I agree with it" Ilske

The only challenge is, it leaves out cutting/making holes in textiles such as
hardanger, or chemical, and so forth.  We are used to thinking of lace
involving threads as the foundation, but in things like reticella or net laces
(as two examples), one uses a foundation to build the design upon and removes
portions, or an airy foundation and embroidery creates the delineations; as
two examples.

I see the valid point that Faye presented; that laying all of lace with
threads only is of course much more labor intensive, so definition was made to
the lay person that their technique was justified in it's expense because it
was handmade.

This is reflected in Arachne discussions about ebay lace listings being hand
or machine and having more value, but doesn't preclude the overall definition
of lace being essentially esthetic holes within a medium, typically textiles.
