I can answer this because I'm getting into a right muddle doing what appears to be a simple Bucks pattern and has several of these. I'm hopeless.

You work a pinchain inside a honeycomb ring when a pair can't be worked outside the ring after a honeycomb stitch. So if it's on the left side, you work a honeycomb stitch on the top left pin and use the same pairs to work another one on the bottom left pin, instead of taking one pair out of the ring after working the top pin and bringing one in to work the bottom pin.
