Subject: [lace] out of print book>
I have persued Print-on demand but they were definitely not interested.
Their
requirements for the format of the pdfs was so unusual that none of my
computer expert friends could make them and the only person they suggested
who
might do them was unable to open my word files because she has a mac. I
tried
for over a year but was unsuccessful and have abandoned the idea. If
anyone
works for a Print on demand company and they would be interested please
contact me.
Good morning Alex
I read with interest your email about re-printing your Torchon book and the
fact that you have abandoned the idea having tried for over a year etc. I
too have been looking once again into the possibility of re-printing my book
on Needlelace as I am appalled and horrified at the exorbitant prices being
asked for second-hand copies by out of print booksellers, whilst I sit here
and watch them do it! Clearly there is a demand for it and I hate to see
lacemakers being 'ripped off ' by these sellers whilst there is nothing I
can do about it! I appreciate that they provide an invaluable service but
these prices are obscene!
The problem we are faced with is the cost involved, which of course will be
high due to the small number of copies required. A large print run is far
cheaper per copy than the small number that we would require. Both our
books will be re-prints, so the demand will be small compared to that of a
new book and how many copies could we expect to sell? I'm sure that like
myself, you would not wish to withdraw a substantial sum of money from our
savings, only to find that we have ordered too many in an attempt to lower
the cost per book and be left with a stack of books that nobody wants!
It would be a huge gamble on our part and times are hard for all of us at
the moment, but I would dearly love to put a stop to the outrageous
profiteering being made from the sale of second-hand copies of my book, and
whilst I'm still alive sitting at my laptop, helplessly watching it happen.
I would be very interested to hear from you when you have seen your printer
next week and maybe you could ask him about colour reproduction, as my book
does have a few colour plates. I would also be interested to know which is
the preferred format to save my files for re-printing? I shall be anxiously
waiting to hear news of your meeting.
Many thanks
Cathy
