That will depend on your printer though.  

My previous Epson one wouldn't print at all if any cartridge was empty. Not 
even in black only if that one was full but one of the colours was empty. When 
one was empty, the whole thing stopped. 

And on my current HP, although it will go on printing, it's not just the 
missing colour that is missing. The over all quality is affected with stripes 
of colour and plain, certainly not clear enough for all the dots to show. 

If you've a graphics programme, you can scan in then turn the background colour 
to white.
