Susan,
A couple of years ago I was asked to write a section about identifying
hand-made lace in a booklet that was used for a series of workshops for textile
curators organized by Dress and Textiles Specialists (DATS) in partnership with
the V&A. As the aim was to help non-specialists to identify hand-made lace I
tried to give an overview of how lace styles changed over time rather than
include lots of photos which could have been rather intimidating.

The booklet is available online at

http://www.dressandtextilespecialists.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/Identifying-Handmade-lace.pdf

and also includes useful information about conservation, display and storage of
lace.
