Afternoon fellow spiders
There is Stiffy (produced by Plaid?) which could be what was being
used on the doileys. Although why one would want to 'preserve' hand
made lace with it defeats my mind!
I used this a number of years ago on ribbon round an easter basket for
my daughter. It worked pretty well, as you can still see the colours
through it, or paint with white paint and then colour your choice!
Maybe this was the stuff...
