That event, the plane crash, spawned one of the ultimate sing-along
songs, too. Don McLean's "American Pie" is a reference to the crash -
with lyrics of "The day the music died."

That was a very popular song in the late 50's. The man who sang it
was J.P. Richardson ("The Big Bopper"). He was killed in a plane
crash (2/3/1959) that also killed two other popular singers, Buddy
Holly and Richie Valens. I still remember how much that shocked the
world of "Rock and Roll". I also remember dancing to it wearing a
poodle skirt with outrageous crinolines, bobby-socks and saddle
shoes! What a blast from the past.
