Janice,

Beds was probably primarily made in linen or cotton but nowadays there's
nothing to stop you from experimenting with different fibers.

Mum (Liz in Melbourne) has made 2 Springett handkie patterns in raw silk -
the lovely creamy colour (that smells like manure when it's pressed) - and
they're gorgeous. She found silk to mount them on and they look great. I
seem to recall that the biggest issue was when you had to retro lace that
the silk got a little fuzzy.

I have made 2 pieces of Beds from Turner's book (both dress decorations) -
one is in grey silk and the other is in a brown silk. It was really nice to
work with but a bit slippery, but the final products are very nice (the grey
piece won a 1st at the Royal Melbourne Show that year).

Have fun with your project. I love the pieces in the Scheele-Kerkoff book
and want to do several when my 2 current beds projects are done :-)

Cheers,
Helen, Aussie in Denver
