I believe that the pointed end could be used on gros point or any similar needle lace with a raised cordonnette to lift the cordonnette up if it has got crushed in wear - or indeed by being pressed by the other end to give it a shine. Of course, it would be easy to improvise with something else from the kitchen drawer, which would also provide a teaspoon to use instead of the other end of the afficot, if you haven't got one and haven't been eating lobsters!
