Has anyone ever seen a recognizable leek rendered in lace? Yes, but it was a needlelace one. In 1990 Northumbria Lacemakers was invited to exhibit at the Gateshead Garden Festival. We naturally chose a horticultural theme for our display and one of our members, Ann Hotchkiss, decided to do a leek (we are famous for our leeks in these parts!). We shared the exhibition hall with the giant vegetable competition and at the end of the weekend Ann sold her leek to the wife of the winner of leek class - if I remember rightly the winning leek was part of the deal and Ann's family was well supplied with leek soup.
