When I started lacemaking, I was on very limited budget, so with the
philosophy that anything others could do , I could do, I took out my
trusty Girl Scout knife and chip carved my own. I've even taught
workshops at reginal Lace Days. My directions are on VanDieren's
FAQ bobbinmaker site. Athritic hands prevent much carving, but I still
turn a few on trusty dremel lathe. Louise in Central Virginia On

I write this note to express my surprise at one little tid-bit I have
discovered in my investigation, which may well have a bearing on these
lovely
objects. It is that "chip carving became so popular in later Victorian
times
as a "great many" ladies-of-leisure took it up as a hobby".

Now there is a thought to conger with. Lace maker ladies carving their
own
bobbins? MMMmmmm!
