Shell, As Doris says The Laces of Ipswich by Marta Cotterel Raffel is an excellent book about the history and rediscovery of this lace that was an entire industry in the 1790s.
Arachne member Karen Thompson has been redrafting the lace samples that were found in the collection of the Library of Congress and creating patterns and prickings based on those originals. She wrote a beautiful article for the May/June 2008 issue of Piecework magazine. I have worked several of the patterns she has drafted but I realized there aren't any photos of the black lace on my blog, just the narrow white edgings. After work tonight I'll try to upload some to the Arachne flickr. I only found the one article online by Jeri Ames about this. But so far no photos, images, or prickings.
