Laconi.ca rocks – I am looking forward to building an internal twitter

I have installed Laconi.ca behind my corporate firewall and am
successfully using twibble to post to the site. However, when I use
some other clients, most notably Twhirl and YATCA (Blackberry), some
characters get consistently replaced by asterisks. When I view these
posts in other clients (web or twibble) they show up just fine. Has
anyone else seen behavior like this? Any ideas on how to fix it?
Al, we sanitize control and UTF-16 surrogate chars by replacing them
with asterisks. Which version of Laconica are you running, 0.7.3? Also
can you be more specific about which characters? I'm thinking it might
be your PHP. Some versions of PHP are compiled against an older PCRE
(Perl Compatible Regular Expressions) library that doesn't understand
one of regular expressions we're using. For example, Fedora/RedHat 5's
stock PHP 5.1.6.
