I've been looking at this recently too. I modified dabr to work with
identi.ca but its only half a solution. It uses the Twitter API and
therefore doesn't support groups or registration. I also find dabr a little
text heavy for small screen phones.
I've recently started to play around with the laconi.ca source to
modify it to support xhtml/mp and html output.
