A blank screen is the result of a very broken PHP script. Usually PHP will try to throw an error, but sometimes it can't for whatever reason.
Check the memory limit in php.ini. I have a vague memory of blank screens when I had a memory limit too small. LAM does check for a recommended limit, but sometimes it's guess is wrong.
