I found another thing that can cause this. A Suhosin 0.9.29 module built
against PHP 5.2.11 but now runnig under PHP 5.2.12 caused the same symptoms.
Fortunatly the apache logs made it clear what the problem was.

I've recompiled the lastest Suhosin module (0.9.32.1) and no more blank pages.
