Yep, that was the problem. Backported 1.7 from Sid on to my Squeeze box and
it works fine now... thanks again. :)

this usually happens if there is an old version of php-fpdf installed.
The RPMs and tar.gz include the right version. But if you installed an
older version in PHP's system include path then this can cause a conflict.
For Debian there is a package with FPDF 1.7 available.
