there should be no configuration needed. Maybe your LDAP server just
behaves differently when searching with a filter of object class top
(should return all accounts) or listing a single entry. Top is a parent
class of inetOrgPerson.

If your other software depends on explicitly setting the top object
class please use custom fields module to add it:
