Yesterday night the symptom was intermittent almost-failure, i.e. dropping 3/4 of the packets.
Today I've done a lot more than last night, and seen no problem. I did however see one time when it didn't see any AP's. Rebooting fixed it. I may try both drivers, but at the moment arn looks to be working somewhat better than ath, so I'll stick with it. The system stopped responding this afternoon, but it turns out I didn't have the cord plugged in all the way and it had run out of power.
