Umm, i know this may sound silly, but is your laptop overheating? the vents aren't too dusty or blocked are they? the only time i've had a dell do that to me (halting at random points) during an install (does it during windows install too) was when it overheated ... i've had it working by removing most of the covers and blowing a fan at it ... usually only happens with older models.
