I have to hand it to the sun guys n gals-- i just installed Solaris Express (snv_46) onto my new Sony VAIO SZ381P and it was easier than installing the crap from redmond- solaris has certainly come along way! so now i guess i gotta go put my ferrari 4000 up for sale on ebay ;)
i was most impressed that the installer detected both graphics cards: the geForce Go 7400 and the intel GMA950 and let me choose the 1280x800 widescreen format. on first boot it looks like there's some banding going on with the gdm and gnome backgrounds, but it's not toooo noticable. on the downside it didn't detect any network interfaces and speedstep doesn't work, AFAIK-- i don't think frkit has intel cpu support yet. but it's still impressive nevertheless-- as a comparison i tried booting knoppix and it didn't even make it thru the boot process-- it froze up sometime after init ran. fedora core 5 seems to work ok on it-- it detected the network card (marvel yukon 88E8036) but i'm not sure if it'll get the grapihcs right-- probably, but i didn't let it go that far. i originally ordered a ferrari 5000 but the ship date kept getting pushed back, so i cancelled my order and when i saw this small, light vaio at the local sony store i thought i'd see what solaris could do on it.... now i just gotta find some network drivers! ;) the speedstep thing i can live with becasue there is a slide switch on the machine that lets you put it in "stamina" or "speed" mode and as long as i keep it on the low setting it doesn't seem to get too hot even without speedstep support. but that doesn't mean i won't volunteer to beta test the new frkit that supports intel cpus! hint! hint!
