The nv driver has the merit of working on all(?) platforms. Sadly, I and a few others have found that the latest nvidia drivers from nvidia.com cause a hard hang at boot time on particular computers (for me it's Sol10 on a Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100.) There seems to be a problem caused by a bus scan that halts when some USB hardware is found. If anybody has a fix please let me know - I've tried everything that I've found via a google search without success.
