I'm running 2008.11 on a whitebox amd64 desktop system that's a few years old. It only has 1GB memory and I didn't have installation problems and it's not running slow. So I think your problem might be somewhere else.
If you boot off the 2008.11 live cd (same as the installation cd), there's an icon that you can click on to run a installation check tool.
