Fixed it. Here's how: This reminded me of a bug Moinak Ghosh found in Belenix w/KDE - that zenity failing made nwam fail and then DHCP. I saw the zenity error in /var/adm/messages & the fact that my WLAN was listed but could not connect. I enabled debug for nwamd & saw that zenity could not pop up the 802.11 network selection window due to an xauth issue. I did xhost +, restarted nwam, the window popped up, I selected my WPA network, entered the key & got an IP address assigned. This made me go look at the NWAM list - where I saw the new NWAM + GUI. I installed the .10 package & everything is working perfectly.
